It is unknown which name ancient Iberians gave to the weapon. Contrary to popular belief, falcata is neither a native name nor one used in classical sources, but a 19th century term coined by historian Fernando Fulgosio to describe the shape of its blade. The term derivates from Latin falcatus, meaning literally "falcon-shaped". [1] [2] Classical vocabulary did have a sword named ensis falcatus, but it was apparently meant to be either a falx or a harpe. In any case, the name caught on very quickly and is now firmly entrenched in the scholarly literature.

Roman armies in the Second Punic War and later, during the Conquest of Hispania, were surprised by the quality of the weapons used by Iberian mercenaries and warriors. The overall quality of the falcata came not only from the shape, but also from the quality of the iron. It is said that steel plates were buried in the ground for two to three years, corroding the weaker steel from them, but this is technically nonsensical as the higher carbon content of the 'better' steel makes it more vulnerable to chemical attacks (= corrosion). The technique of joining layers of steel in a fire-welding process in a forge was a standard procedure. [4]

The Falcata was primarily a slashing weapon, but it could also stab. The shape of the blade distributed the weight in a way so as to give the weapon the momentum of an axe while maintaining the versatility of a sword.

The Falcata was commonly used by Pre-Roman Iberians, although it is possible that the Falcata had origins older than this. It's possible that the Greek Kopis inspired the design of the Falcata. Because Romans faced this sword during their conquests of Iberia, it wasn't uncommon for Romans to use this sword as well.

It was the weapon of 50 Lusitanus warriors that Hannibal brought from Lvsitanea to fight Rome, The production of this weapon has druid secrets, as lusitanea was the biggest celtic tribe in Iberia. The Romans told it was a feared weapon, it could cut helmets and damage shields.

ABOUT THIS SWORD:

Been playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey and want a sword like Alexandros or Kassandra uses? Maybe you're just a fan of Roman and Greek swords, and understand that the Falcata was the ancestor to the Roman Gladius. Or maybe you just think the Falcata looks dope and want a custom-engraved version (is "dope" still an edgy word? Should I add fo shizzle to this sentence? Help. please. ). Any reason is a good reason to grab one of these personalized Falcata swords. They are unique, have a long and storied history, and look *dope*. Yeah, still doesn't work, even with the emphasis.

Our Iberian Falcata (fun fact: these swords weren't originally called "falcatas." They were simply known as "machaera Hispana" which means, cryptically, "Spanish Sword." Yeah, the cryptically thing was sarcasm) is a decorative recreation of this storied weapon. The 22-inch blade is made from silky smooth stainless steel, carved with fuller loops in the Celtic/Iberian tradition. The hilt is made from polished hardwood and brass, and beautifully sculpted to look like a horse head (a copy of an actual unearthed falcata design). The blade curves forward slowly in what may be the world's first ergonomic engineering. This curve allows for far greater transfer of energy (you hit harder) and faster strikes.

The Iberian Falcata comes with a black leather sheath and thirty pounds of intimidation.

HISTORY OF THE IBERIAN FALCATA:

Few swords have the history and impressive reputation of the Falcata. Although it is often called a Roman Sword, the falcata was actually created by the Iberians (Ancient Spaniards, to you and me). But if you go back even further in time (and we can because we finally fixed the flux capacitor on our time machine) this sword took influences from Celtic weapons, and possibly even the Egyptian khopesh.

Fast forward a few hundred years to the beginnings of the Roman empire. The unstoppable Roman conquering machine stalls at the border of Iberia. Why? Mainly because of the Iberian light infantry--soldiers who wore little armor and fought with a sword the Romans had never seen. Yeah, we're talking about the Falcata--A weapon like a Swiss army knife. The thick forward edge, combined with the ergonomic blade angle, allowed for unimaginably powerful blows that were more like axe strikes than sword blows. The angled blade allowed for fast and vicious slashes that left terrible wounds. And the soldiers wielding these swords were just as terrifying. Their light armor allowed them to utilize their incredible speed and acrobatic attacks to assault the Romans from every side. Historians of the period called the Iberian warriors "poetry in combat." The Romans were so impressed by the Iberians that they altered their own swords at the time -- long-bladed spathas -- into the short, V-tipped Gladius that we know and love today.

5th Century BC Swords

Celtic Sword - The most common Celtic swords were the long and short swords. The swords had leaf-shaped blades and featured hilts that were made of either copper, wood, bone or horn. The sword’s cross-guards and pommels were often “U” shaped with the “U” facing opposite directions. Swords’ scabbards were usually made from two plates of iron or bronze.

Falcata Sword - Falcata was type of a sword that was in use in the pre-Roman Hispania that encompassed today’s Iberian Peninsula including Spain and Portugal. The falcata sword was similar to Greek kopis sword. The term falcata was coined recently and it is derived from the Latin expression ensis flacatus meaning “sickle-shaped sword”. The shape of the sword distributes the weight so that the weapon is able to deliver heavy blow of an axe while maintaining the cutting blade of a sword. The falcate-type swords were derived from sickle-shaped knives used in the Iron Age. It is believed that falcatas were introduced to the Iberian Peninsula by the Celts and that their origin is parallel to the Greek Kopis.

Kopis Sword - The Kopis was a single-handed sword that featured a blade that was forward-curving. The average length of the sword was 3 feet. The sword was used not only as a weapon but also as a cutting tool used to cut meat or to slaughter animals. The Kopis sword is believed to be the predecessor of Iberian Falcata sword.

Makhaira Sword - Makhaira was a type of a short and slightly curved sword used in Ancient Greece. Makhaira sword is contemporary to the other Greek sword, Xiphos however, it is suggested that the Xiphos was the prevalent sword among the Greek army, whereas the Makhaira sword was common among the cavalry.

Xiphos Sword - The xiphos is a sword that was used by the ancient Greeks. The sword featured a double-edged, leaf-shaped blade that was perfect for cutting, slashing and thrusting. Xiphos was a short and thus, single-handed sword. The sword was used as a secondary, close combat weapon and it was used when the primary weapon, the spear was discarded. The very early Xiphos swords were made of bronze. Similarly shaped swords were in existence throughout the Europe under various different names. En example can be the La Tene Celtic short sword that was contemporary with the Greek Xiphos.

Iberian Falcata (Silver)

- Zamak handle finished in silver with grip in ivory imitation, stainless steel blade.

The falcata is a type of weapon, a sword of steel originated in Iberia, and therefore related to the Iberian native populations before the Roman conquest. It was used by the Iberian countries or neighbors like the Celtiberians being the most common sword in the area of the peninsula.

Roman chroniclers praised the quality of the iron that was used for the construction of the Hispanic weapons they were surprised by its cutting ability and flexibility, one of the most prized and sought features in its manufacture.

As a curious note, reflecting the effectiveness of these weapons, after the first battles in the Iberian Peninsula, an order was given to Roman troops to reinforced with iron the edges of their shields, possibly due to the cutting power of the falcatas, much higher than the straight swords and sabers.

Lite Strabo

"It cuts off arms from the shoulder, heads from necks with a single hit, leaves the entrails out and produces all kinds of horrible wounds".

So told Pliny the Elder, in his Naturalis Historia, about the charms of the most feared weapon in the pre-Roman era. In the 2nd century BC, after the Second Punic War, the Roman Empire had expelled Carthage from the Iberian Peninsula. Now this territory was on a plate, and with it, its iron and copper mines, the richest of the Known World. However, a general uprising of Iberian and Celtiberian tribes against the invaders prolonged their conquest for almost two hundred years, and became hell for the Roman Legions.

The fierce resistence the natives opposed was influenced by their better knowledge of the terrain and their guerrilla war, but the use of the falcata, a sword clearly superior to Roman weapons, hit hard in the legions' moral. Augustus even orderd to renforce with iron the shields of the armies that left for Hispania, to try to mitigate its cutting effect.

The falcata's probable origin is the Greek kopis, a type of saber that Greek merchants brought in their colonial missions. From 5th century BC, Iberians gradually transformed it, decreased its curvature, added a double edge at the end (so that it could also operate as a thrust weapon, and especially improved its method of fabrication by using very pure iron and a three-plates structure. This lead to a very flexible weapon which was virtually impossible to break by other weapons of the time.

Its cutting power was most effective when used from high, such as in cavalries or at the defense of city walls. That is why, because of its characteristic shape, the hit came in a direction tangent to the target, and not perpendicular such as in the Roman gladius, so the cut was deeper. This technique has been later used, drom the scimitars to the modern sabers that Napolean dragoons used.

Well. Did the Romans try to copy this weapon?

That's a very good question. I have searched for this while pretending to work :)

Apparently, the Romans had a very fixed military tactics which relied on highly trained heavy infantry (legion). The legions weared big shields and, for short distance combat, a short straight sword (gladius), used to attack with the point, not with the blade.

The falcata would have been completely useless if used with such a huge shield. It was instead intended for short and quick, unexpected chopping movements. Romans would have had to radically change the operation of the army they were so proud of.

The thing is that the falcata was a good weapon to counteract heavy legions. But no effective way to counteract the falcata was found :)

what a beauty weapon, is perfecto melee combat, if don't mistake it the grip is made it to the final stab with a little hook, right?
